Principal Investigator

Dr. Martin Mikl

Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor)

Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, Martin studied Molecular Biology as well as Linguistics at the University of Vienna. After a PhD at the IMP Vienna (Advisor: Dr. Carrie Cowan), a Post-doc at the Weizmann Institute in Israel (Advisors: Prof. Eran Segal and Prof. Yitzhak Pilpel) and short research projects in Switzerland and Japan, he joined the University of Haifa as a faculty member and opened his lab in November 2020.

Throughout his scientific career he has been intrigued by the many ways in which gene expression can be regulated, qualitatively and quantitatively, temporally and spatially. Employing both systems-level and targeted approaches in primary neurons, human cell lines and C. elegans, he has been investigating gene regulation from diverse angles, covering both its functional role in the cell as well as its mechanistic implementation.

Lab Manager

Dr. Orit David

As a former undergraduate, MSc and PhD student (advisor: Prof. Kobi Rosenblum) as well as lab manager at the University of Haifa Orit has a longstanding connection to the university. Throughout this time she acquired comprehensive knowledge in many fields, including cell culture, biochemistry, pharmacology, in-vivo electrophysiology and various mice and behavioral models. Her main expertise is studying changes in cellular cascades and their effect on protein synthesis and behavior.

In the Mikl lab her central goal is to understand the functional importance of gene regulation for proper functioning of the cell and organism.

Current Members

Dr. Anton Schwartz

Research Associate

Anton received his Ph.D. degree from Moscow State University (Advisor: Dr. Maxim Skulachev). The main subjects of his research are RNA turnover and the molecular basis of oncological and autoimmune diseases.
In the Mikl laboratory, his main goal is to understand the role of changing of RNA turnover processes in the development of oncological and age-related diseases.
